EMS(Energy Management System)
The expansion of renewable energy and its proper integration within the electricity grid is becoming a global issue due to increasing intermittency of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar with power output fluctuating with the weather conditions.
Nippon Koei has developed its own control system named NK-EMS and connected it to a storage battery system. The Company will offer to National Grid a Firm Frequency Response (FFR) service which automatically controls the frequency, keeping it within the designated range. Our control system discharges when the frequency drops to below the designed range, and charges when the frequency rises by detecting frequency fluctuation that occurs at every moment.
Currently predominant lithium-ion batteries and lead-acid batteries are relatively inexpensive, but their life is shortened when they are repeatedly charged and discharged. To address this challenge, Nippon Koei has developed a new hybrid energy storage system that combines FlystabⓇ, which has long-life and highspeed charge/discharge features, with a conventional energy storage system. In addition, we have developed in-house an energy management system (EMS) that controls the hybrid energy storage system and conducted an operation test under actual use conditions in a simulated microgrid environment that was built at FREA. Through such test, it was verified that the system can remarkably reduce the charge/discharge current and the number of charge cycles of lithium batteries and lead-acid batteries, since FlystabⓇ absorbs the short-period fluctuation of the frequency fluctuations
